Dr. Phil. M. A. Julia-Constance Dissel – philosopher, design & art professional

After my studies in philosophy, art history and archeology in Basel, Freiburg and Frankfurt/M. and in cultural and media practice, I got a doctoral scholarship at the Max Planck Institute in Frankfurt/M. and obtained a doctorate in philosophy from the Goethe University Frankfurt/M. in 2012. Since than I have been highly engaged in research and teaching mostly in the philosophy of mind and applied philosophy such as the philosophy and theory of design, technology & art (aesthetics and ethics), which took me to diverse universities – amongst others the University of Oxford (UK), the University Konstanz as well as the HTWG (University of applied Sciences) Konstanz, the University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt and the University of Art & Design (HFG) Offenbach. I’ve received diverse research and teaching fellowships such as the Mathilde-Planck Fellowship by the Ministry for Science & Art (MWK)  Baden-Württemberg and I’ve worked in the BMBF funded Professorship-Program; I implemented research projects funded by the Hessian Ministry for Science and Art (HMWK) at the University of applied Sciences Darmstadt concentrating on Diversity & Equality Issues in design & emerging technologies and from 2020 on I was also visiting professor for ‘Wahrnehmungstheorie’ at the University of Art & Design Offenbach (HFG). Currently I am working for the European University of Technology,   responsible for the build up of the European Culture and Technology Lab + at the University of applied sciences Darmstadt and as  advisory board member of the academic press.

Besides my academic engagement I am a board member of the AICA Germany – Accociation international Critique d’Art based in Paris and member of the iGDN – the international Gender Design Network in Cologne. I ran my own magazine “Critica- for philosophy and art theory for over six years. After selling I started my own studio & consulting business for art and design projects mainly focusing on consulting services , the buildup of art collections and exhibition projects –  from a gender equal, diverse, inclusive & all in all sustainable perspective. Aspects of fairness and justice as well sustainability in the art & design business have become more and more important to me.

As a philosopher and art & design specialist it is my interest to create more equitable and sustainable futures through a critical & social-ethical approach to a world shaped by design and technology that still too often seems discriminating, one sited and striving for questionable so-called innovations or decisions.
